Department of Santali

Department of Santali

About the Department

The Santali language is one of the ancient languages of India, deeply rooted in the history of the Austro-Asiatic language family. It is the language of indigenous communities across the world, carrying a rich cultural and linguistic heritage. Recognizing the need for a dedicated script, Pandit Raghunath Murmu developed the ‘Ol-Chiki’ script for Santali.

Santali was officially included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India on December 22, 2003, granting it the status of a recognized language. At our institution, the General course in Santali was introduced in 2007, followed by the Honours course in 2010. Over the years, the intake capacity of the department has expanded to 32 students.

The Santali Department holds a prominent place in our college, strengthened by the dedication of past and present faculty members, as well as the unwavering enthusiasm of our students, who are the true pillars of this department. Currently, the department is supported by one full-time permanent faculty member and three SACT (State Aided College Teachers), ensuring a balanced distribution of academic responsibilities.

From its inception, the department has consistently delivered encouraging results. Beyond academics, the Santali language plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Santal community. Through dedicated efforts in teaching and research, the department continues to uphold and celebrate the rich legacy of the Santali language.
